The XL fallout: is it safe to book direct?

16th September 2008

Over the past week or so, there has been an enormous amount of press and TV coverage of all the holidaymakers "abandoned" when XL airways (plus a few others, but that is the big one) collapsed.

It is horrible for the travellers - the ones looking forward to their holidays who now have to try and book elsewhere, but for me the worst case is those left thousands of miles from home with little chance of getting a flight. And if there is a flight available, having to pay through the nose for it. I feel terribly for all those affected.

So, how does this change the habits of holidaymakers in the future? The "independant" traveller who saves through booking their flights and accommodation seperately and directly is the fastest growing segement of the holiday market right now. Will they abandon this and retreat to the expensive security of packaged holidays?

Some will, I don't doubt it. However, those who still want to continue on this excellent way of travelling, I have one piece of advice...

USE A CREDIT CARD!

I know there are often percentage levies on using these but the protection afforded is more than worth it in my opinion. It won't reduce the hassle if you are left in the lurch, but it will mean you'll not be out of pocket if the proverbial hits the fan. Don't rely on your travel insurance alone - in this climate, the belt and braces approach is the best way forward.
